Below are the attributes and capabilities necessary to become a successful undertaker.
Undertakers, also called Funeral Directors, are experts who organize activities and ceremonies associated with funerals. To achieve success in this profession the person performing these duties should have certain essential and unique skills and qualities.
Since an undertaker’s services may be required at any time of day or night, the person venturing into this profession must be willing to be on call at all hours. This is essentially an outdoors task, which will require him to be away from office for most of the time.
To be an undertaker, a person should be able to interact well and should accommodate the viewpoints of others. He should be able to manage and interact with people of all age groups and people having different religious and cultural backgrounds. A sensitive and caring attitude will be a great help in this job. However, he must be mentally strong and not become shaken by other people’s grief, so that he can offer psychological support to them.
As an undertaker, a person should project a dignified and serene personality, while seeing that his behaviour doesn’t heighten the sorrow of the bereaved family members and relatives.
Knowledge of various religious customs, rituals and beliefs and due respect for these greatly helps undertakers find success in their profession. As various people follow different funeral customs and methods, it is better to have understanding of these.
A successful undertaker will essentially possess good management abilities and organisation skills. Making arrangements for critical services like flowers, ceremonies etc will entail coordination with many providers and will need leadership and guidance abilities.
As the undertaker will shoulder the responsibility of getting all clearances and adhering to all regulations related to the ceremony, he will have to be well versed in such procedures and legal formalities. He will need to be fully conscious of procedures to be followed with respect to obtaining death certificates or insurance payments.
Finally, he should necessarily be able to and be qualified to drive vehicles such as hearses and limousines during the funeral service.
